PERSONALITY
Growing up, Steve was the epitome of an outcast. Being small for his age, malnourished, and having asthma all led other kids to believe that he was easy pickings for bullies. In fact, if it wasn’t for his best friend, Bucky Barnes, Steve wouldn’t have had anyone to rely on growing up. Especially once his mother died sometime during his late teens or early twenties. Steve had to learn to stand up for himself from an early age. This quickly extended to standing up for others as well, causing Steve to develop a no tolerance policy for anyone he considers a bully. It is this policy of his that leads him into wanting to join the army once the war reaches the US, because he sees Hitler and the Nazis as nothing but another group of bullies, picking on the weak. Ironically it is his health, the very thing that had made Steve a target for bullies in the first place, that holds Steve back from enlisting. It comes as a blow to Steve because it reinforces his feelings of inadequacy in being how he is. For all the fights he’s been in and for all the bullies he’s made a stand against, he has never been able to take them down himself; always needing to rely on Bucky to step in for him when things get too bad. The knowledge that Bucky would be going to war without him did nothing but make him feel more desperate to be enlisted so that he wouldn’t be out there alone.
It is this drive, this loyalty, and this pure stubbornness that makes Steve who he is before and after he is given the serum. His dislike of bullies and his willingness to throw himself into danger are all things that have always been there. The serum only took these things and enhanced them; it did not make Steve a hero. It only gave Steve what he needed to live up to his potential. With the serum Steve is finally able to fight his own battles and win. He is no longer the man people pick on, but someone that they respect. And yet, at his core, Steve is the same man he’s always been. He never lets the attention he garners from being Captain America go to his head. And he’s never used his identity of being a Living Legend to get his way. In fact, Steve is a very private person who would rather avoid being in the public eye. He wants to do his job and let that be the end of it. He doesn’t even feel that people should be grateful to him because he’s just doing what he believes is right.
When it comes to things he believes in, Steve is staunch in approach. It would literally be more productive to beat your head against the wall than try to talk him out of something, or get him to believe any different. When he has a cause, he sticks to it until the bitter end. That isn’t to say that he can’t see things from different points of view, but that if there is a right point of view then it’s his. This isn’t out of any kind of arrogance or belief that he knows better than others, but that he trusts himself to know what’s right. When it comes to people, things can be more complicated because Steve does tend to judge people based on first impressions and it is very hard to make him think otherwise. His early interactions with Tony Stark are a great example because Steve has an instant dislike for Tony because of his arrogance. However, after having to fight alongside each other and seeing Tony almost sacrifice himself, Steve is forced to admit that he had made the wrong call. Similarly, in AoU Steve is quick to give Wanda and Pietro a second chance once he sees that they are no longer on Ultron’s side. That said; once you get involved with Steve, through being an acquaintance or a friend, you will have someone you can trust no matter what. Steve is fiercely loyal to people he cares about and trustworthy to a fault.
Sacrifice is something that Steve is very familiar with. From jumping on a grenade during boot camp to crashing the Red Skull’s aircraft into the ocean, Steve has shown time and time against that he is willing to sacrifice himself, not only for his friends, but for everyone. The entire world if that’s what it takes. And what’s significant about this is that he makes these decisions without hesitation, without fearing what will happen to him. This shows not only a willingness to die for what he believes in, and for others, but also a side of him that is maybe a little careless with his own life, extending back to his alley fight days when he could have easily been killed during any of those fights, considering how bad his health was. Despite being willing to sacrificing himself, he doesn’t like to see anyone else make the same call or to die instead. He tends to take it personally when he loses someone close to him, feeling guilty even when there was nothing he could have done. The best example of this being Bucky’s apparent death during The First Avenger. He feels responsible, even going so far as trying to get drunk afterwards. On the other hand, when he finds out Bucky is alive and the Winter Soldier, he also blames himself for that, going so far during their final battle to refuse to fight him, once again sacrificing himself.
Steve is a trained soldier, first and foremost. He has led teams on missions and been in charge, but he also knows how to follow orders. However, it is important to point out that Steve never follows anyone blindly, and if he is against something, he will speak out. Much like he did about Project Insight during The Winter Soldier. Since joining SHIELD he’s learned to be skeptical about things, and to not trust everything he’s being told. He’s had to adapt to more cloak and dagger ways of working, especially after Pierce turned SHIELD against him, which tends to feel awkward for Steve because he’s so used to being up front in his approach to things.
Despite his valiant efforts, Steve is very much a man out of time. A young man with very old and outdated ideals (which his teammates sometimes relentlessly tease him about such as the infamous “language” jokes in AoU), yet Steve doesn’t let that stop him from trying to fit in. He goes so far as to carry around a list of things to get caught up on, going from TV shows to food to music. However, no matter how much he tries, he will never be able to fit in completely, or forget all that he’s lost. He’s a man who has mourned almost everyone he’s ever known and lost everything familiar to him. But Steve shows his ability to adapt quickly to situation by not allowing his grief to consume him and instead putting his focus on what he can be doing, what he can throw himself into next, which is at least part of the reason why working for SHIELD appeals to him. He is far from an open book with his feelings, but he is willing to let people in, particularly if he feels they can understand how he feels. A case in point is Sam and his ability to relate to Steve because they’ve both lost partners. But on the flip side of that, Steve is often a person who prefers to sit with his feelings and keep them private. He doesn’t like to be vulnerable in front of people and will try to hide his feelings by changing topics or disguising his feelings with humor.
What might surprise people about Steve is his dry humor and sarcasm, which usually comes out during serious moments and even during battles, like when he tells Sam “If they’re shooting at you, they’re bad” during a fight against HYDRA in Winter Soldier. Also the fact that he was studying to be an artist before the war broke out and still occasionally does sketches in his free time. Aside from him usually judging people on first impressions, his immediate response to meeting people is to be as civil and polite as possible, unless someone pushes his buttons. He has a surprisingly short fuse for people he doesn’t like or people who have offended him in the past in some way, and will tend to respond to them in a super defiant or condescending way.
